7 Keys to Harmonious Family Relationships

1. No unkind words to anyone 

Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips. -Psalm 141:3 (NIV). Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. [In contrast] Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you (Ephesians 4:31-32).

2. No physical harm to anyone 

But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. -Matthew 5:39 (NIV). Do not envy the violent or choose any of their ways. For the Lord detests the perverse but takes the upright into his confidence(Proverbs 3:31-32)

3. No backtalk 

My mouth is filled with Your praise, declaring Your splendor all day long. -Psalm 71:8 (NIV). A gentle answer turns away wrath (Proverbs 15:1).

4. No tattling (unless in the case of emergencies

Do not go about spreading slander about your people. -Leviticus 19:16a (NIV). Also, Proverbs 16:28 warns that it is a perverse person who stirs up dissension. “A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret” (Proverbs 11:13)

5. No bad attitude 

Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid. -Proverbs 12:1 (NIV). Scripture contrasts negative attitudes like anger, bitterness, and pride with positive ones like humility, joy, and love repeatedly.

6. No destruction of property 

The house of the wicked will be destroyed, but the tent of the upright will flourish. -Proverbs 14:11 (NIV) addresses the destruction of property by highlighting the contrast between the righteous and the wicked. Specifically, Proverbs 24:15 warns against harming the dwellings of the righteous, while Proverbs 14:11 contrasts the eventual destruction of the house of the wicked with the flourishing of the upright’s tent. In addition, the book emphasizes wisdom in managing resources and warns againstwastefulness (Proverbs 21:20). 

7. No grumbling or complaining 

Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation… -Philippians2:14-15. Instead, carry your weight as Paul instructs believers, For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “If a man will not work, he shall not eat.” -2 Thessalonians 3:10
